The fragmented continents towards the South Pole drift northward to the Equator, and coalesce into another supercontinent called Gondwana. Later in the period, a landmass called Avalonia broke off and drifted away. Laurentia and the Iapetus Ocean shrank during this time, as the continent Baltica approached them.
