Pistol and Boo may have "left the building", but Barnaby Joyce says an investigation into how Johnny Depp smuggled his pampered pooches into the country is underway.

The movie star, who is filming in Australia, has sent the dogs back to the US in the lap of luxury on a private jet to avoid being put down.

But the agricultural minister is none the wiser how the terriers got through border control in the first place.

"This is what we are going to try and find out, whether Louis Vuitton has a mechanism for anti poodle screening, I don't know," he quipped on Sky News.
