A grandiose concerted work for chorus in as many as eight parts and an exceptionally mixed assortment of instruments, setting the Latin Mass. Bach, ever the compiler, assembled that Mass near the end of his career out of pieces that had accumulated over a period of more than two decades, including many cantata choruses.
