Matthew Snyder filed a lawsuit against Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church for an invasion of privacy and causing the family emotional distress when the members of the church expressed homophobic and hurtful messages at his son's funeral.

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church 8-1. The Supreme court stated that a punishment for the church would violate the First Amendment's freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, and freedom of speech, despite how distasteful the words are.
