FROM ROLLING STONE:
WHO BETTER TO team up on an old seafarer’s favorite than Tom Waits and Keith Richards, who recorded a version of “Shenandoah” for the upcoming compilation Son of Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys, which Anti- is set to release on February 19th. Waits’ trademark growl anchors the track, which features a chorus of singers and some anachronistic but no less affecting electric guitar noodling from Richards.
The compilation was curated and created by Johnny Depp, Gore Verbinski and Hal Willner – the star, producer and director of Pirates of the Caribbean, respectively – and is the follow-up to the 2006 CD, Rogue’s Gallery. “It is a very different record than Volume 1,” Willner told Rolling Stone in December. “It seems happier – not as much about torture, sodomy and death.” You can also check out ex-Pogue Shane MacGowan belting “Leaving Liverpool” in a gruff sailor’s voice, with some help from Depp and Verbinski.
Son of Rogue’s Gallery also features collaborations from Patti Smith and Depp, Courtney Love and Michael Stipe, Iggy Pop and a Hawk and a Hacksaw, as well as contributions from Sean Lennon, Nick Cave and Broken Social Scene among others.
