Johnny Depp was given the MTV Generation Award for his contribution to the film industry at the MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles

The award, which is the MTV Movie Awards’ highest honour, was presented by Aerosmith’s lead singer Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry.

It recognizes Depp’s contribution to the film industry and his role in entertaining a generation of fans.

Past recipients include Reese Witherspoon, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Sandra Bullock, Mike Myers, Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey.

After watching a montage of his films at the ceremony, Depp said: "This is the get of the business award. Based on watching all of those clips there is clearly something wrong with me."

Following his award, Depp picked up his guitar and joined The Black Keys on stage for a rendition of Gold On the Ceiling.
