The Battle of Gettysburg was perhaps the best example of Civil War warfare. The two armies collided in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania during General Lee's attempted invasion of the North. The war was gruesome and amounted to well over 40,000 casualties and the fighting was beyond brutal. The North, with it's healthy and fresher troops won the battle and halted Lee's invasion. This was a massive victory for the North and a very severe loss for the South, not just in military advantage but in manpower also, considering almost 25,000 Confederate soldiers perished, were incapacitated, or were capured in the battle.
