Prussia and Austria declared war upon Denmark. Their action was governed by a request on January 16, 1864, for Denmark to rescind its November 1863 constitution; within days, Denmark refused to do so. The Austro-Prussian demand provided for a joint settlement of the Schleswig-Holstein question and excluded the broader German Confederation. Within days of the initial contact between the opposing armies, the Danes were in retreat.
