This battle, which occurred near the Virginia Coast, didn’t have a clear victor. However, it was the first naval battle of the war and one of the first meetings in combat of ironclad warships. The ships on both sides had better armor than weapon technology, so the ships suffered some damage but there were no casualties. This battle continued to increase the tension between the North and South as both sides realized that the new technologies like ironclad warships would open up new possibilities for the war.
