When they made it to Stalingrad, Stalin ordered the soldiers to keep hold of the city no matter what happened. Soviet troops were stationed inside houses, and the Germans had to clear the house after house, losing thousands of soldiers.
The battle of Stalingrad is significant, because it is known as the turning point of the war in Europe. The Axis took more than one million casualties in this battle. Unlike the Soviet Union, they did not have as large of a population. After this battle, Germany would find themselves trying to defend their recently gained territory. However, they would eventually fail. The battle of Stalingrad was also Germany's first major loss in Europe.
