The causes of the war were militarism, alliances, imperialism, nationalism and the assassination; murder of Franz Ferdinand. The war was between the Triple Alliance with Germany, Austria Hungary and Turkey against the Triple Entente with France, Britain and Russia. US entered the war in 1917.
