In 1984, after 4 years of suffering through the AIDS epidemic, the cause of AIDS was officially diagnosed. It was discovered that AIDS was caused by an STD known as HIV. The period between receiving HIV and having it develop into AIDS is still unknown, as some people have had HIV for many years and yet still it has not developed into AIDS.
