1 Jan 930 Jahr - The Althing (Viking Parliament) is established in Iceland
Beschreibung:
The Althing, a parliament established in 930 CE that governed Iceland during the Viking Age, is one of the oldest national parliaments in the world. The modern parliament in Iceland takes the same name as the government established in 930 CE, though there have been many changes over the last 1000 years.
The Althing, met on a plain called Thingvellir each year in summer where they listened as the law code was recited by a representative called the Lawspeaker. Then they discussed making new laws and amending old laws. One of the more prominent amendments they made to their law code was the adoption of Christianity in 1000 CE. Another role of the Althing’s was to try to resolve conflict which they tried to do as peacefully as possible. The Althing was unique as all freemen had a voice and say in what happened.
