A Swedish engineer working for the Volvo car company, Nils Bohlin, created the 3-point seat belt. Before the 3-point belt, cars that had seat belts only had a 2-point lap belt. When a person in a 2-point belt was involved in a high-speed accident, they often suffered significant internal injuries. When designing the 3-point belt, Bohlin used human factors to guide decisions. He knew that the solution must be simple and easy to fasten with only one hand making the harness not just safer, but also easier for the passengers than a lap belt. Seeing how effective the seat belt design was for improving safety, Volvo decided to allow other car manufactures to use the 3-point harness for free, and they were so effective, that all American made cars were required to have Bohlin's seat belts by 1968.
