In 1945, the Artificial Limbs Program was launched to improve the quality of life for amputees returning home from World War 2. The program had doctors consulting with engineers to create prosthetic, and it quickly became apparent that more studies needed to be conducted in order to properly fit prosthetics to patients. This program helped lead the development of the discipline of biomechanics.
