as small economic units in a divided europe could not prosper, the joint economic package was to include the whole of europe

1. multinational aid programme in europe would permit a more rational use of us funds by aiding integration and the division of labour

2. promised to soothe the french fear of a german revival

3. funding could be achieved in the us congress as it would be seen as an anti communist party

2 goals of the marshall plan

a) to contain the growth of communism

b) make europe prosperous again and provide export markets for american goods

also hoped to break the ties between the ussr and eastern european countries due to attractiveness of the marshall plan

1. when european countries were economically independent and the market economy was strengthened

2. soviet style planned economy would lose attractiveness

despite soviet opposition at any attempt to make an attempt at an integrated german recovery, us would still go ahead with reviving the economy of west germany despite negative consequences for german unity
