This sacrament dates back to the time of Jesus and the apostles, however, it’s institution is said to be on Pentecost. This sacrament has gone through many changes. People such as Saint Columba have influenced this sacrament into what it is now today. There were three main periods of change: Early Christian Penance (time of the Apostles to the 6th century), Tariff Penance (7th century to the 12th century), and Indivisual Penance (13th century to the present).
