28 Jun 1914 Jahr - Archduke Francis Ferdinand is assassinated Ferdinand while enjoying a parade was plotted against and eventually killed by the group the black hand. While this group was poorly put together in the end one of the assassins was able to simply walk up to Ferdinand and shoot both him and his wife. After this, Austia- Hungary declared war on Serbia. This caused the alliance system to activate and soon Germany declares war on Russia and France. Britain declares war on Germany. And Austria declares war on Russia
