Texas/Mexico War
• Alamo (Mexico lost, but "Remember the Alamo" became a rallying cry for Texan troops)
• Goliad Massacre (425–445 prisoners of war from the Texian Army of the Republic of Texas were executed by the Mexican Army in the town of Goliad, Texas)

Texas wins
• Capture Santa Anna
• US gives support to Texas, but not through providing troops

US still could not accept Texas. Annexing it would have upset the balance between slave states (which Texas was) and free states that had been accomplished with the Missouri Compromise of 1820.


Eventual Annexation of Texas
• Annexation (simple majority vote in Senate) rather than treaty (3/4 vote in Senate)
• Opposed by Northern abolitionists (Texas is slave state)
