after ada was born, everything was semi-fine
they've all found their places in the world, anneliese has settled somewhat and accepted that her girlhood dreams were really just dreams and the world isn't nearly as romantic as she'd hoped
as she didn't come from nobility and honestly doesn't have a lot of experience with it, robb was like 'yknow what babe, ur ladies-in-waiting aren't gonna be snobbish noblewomen, they're gonna be rich girls like u'
but when robb starts showing a little too much kindness towards one of them after her father died (and it really was just kindness, he's not an irredeemable asshole just yet), anneliese kinda snaps
she accuses him of cheating on her with the girl, whose name is eileen macdorman, which he denies
they fight for a bit, but he finally gets her to calm down and believe that he really didn't cheat on her bc, yknow, he didn't
when robb has to leave on business in the capital, though, she can't find one of her favourite rings and she accuses eileen of stealing it when she sees her with a near identical ring
she denies it, so anneliese dismisses her and sends her home to her family and, in the solitude of her quarters, comes to the wrongful conclusion that, rather than this girl just owning a piece of jewellery that looks an awful lot like the one she lost, that robb took it and gave it to her as a declaration of love and that he lied to her all along
infuriated, she goes to james's room in the middle of the night, dismisses all guards and servants on her way, and tries to strangle him in his sleep
he fights back and scratches her cheek, snapping her out of it
she falls to the floor crying, and he tries to comfort her bc he doesn't understand what just happened (and would later reinterpret this as either his dad trying to kill him or the lady-in-waiting and it's like, a huge revelation that it was actually his mom) and also it's his mom, and they hug for a while
he asks her what's wrong, she replies smth like 'nothing ... for long' then gets up and leaves
she finds eileen's family home, and after being invited in by a servant, stabs said servant and sets fire to the townhouse, leading to the fire of hallebury house, which would later become an urban myth and ghost story
she then goes to the docks and jumps into the pier, unaware that james had followed her and seen everything with the fire and now this
this whole night becomes a kind of a local legend
obv there were rumours that anneliese killed eileen and her family, but when robb returned, he imprisoned and even executed some of the people spreading said rumour, so it was quickly quelled
some people claim anneliese was murdered as well and framed for the fire, and some people believe it was isabela who did it, even though she wasn't even in the country yet
some people think it was ll bc, yknow, she's ll
five guesses as to whom the rest of the ladies-in-waiting were
this is also the reason robb dismissed all ladies-in-waiting for isa and ada and only had lower maids attend to them
not bc he was afraid of history repeating itself but bc he's traumatised af
