The Continental System was a failed attempt to blockade Britain off from the rest of the world so as to paralyze their economy. Because Napoleon couldn't have complete control over the seas, however, the British were able to smuggle goods to and from Britain, which essentially made the French blockade useless. In retaliation, the British blockaded many European ports, which backfired Napoleon's plan and made many goods scarce in Europe.
