For many settlers looking to expand westward, following the call of manifest destiny to the ‘wild west’ seemed like the best justification. However, as more white settlers began establishing small towns in what is now New Mexico and California, their feelings of superiority began encroaching upon the Mexican ranchers who were already living on the land. In addition, they implemented a foreign structure of government, including taxation, that the Mexican Ranchers did not understand, nor support. This brought a lot of cultural tension between the white anglo settlers and Mexican ranchers as there was a dispute over how to divide the land, eventually leading to war. With the closing of the war, the US gained the land that would become California, Utah, Texas, and Nevada. Obtaining these states would later become an issue as Texas was one of the largest slave states.
