Rongopai is an example of a shift from the traditional representation in whakairo towards a painterly approach to storytelling. The whare depicts stories and pūrakau with a vibrancy of colour that are reds, blues and greens that were not often used or seen in this era. It is noted for the distinct collision of style and method with typical abstract forms of tūpuna vibrantly present juxtaposed with humanised portraits of ancestors.

These include scenes of European influence on the panels with the use of text and scenes of ancestors in Victorian dress, horses, and botanic splendour with detailed scenes of ancestors climbing trees.

Built in preparation for the return of leader Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Tūruki, it connects the Horouta Waka, Waipaoa awa and maunga Ngātapa.
