He had to take over president after Lincoln was assassinated. He was a southerner, racist, and thought that Black people shouldn't have a role in the reconstruction. He was a democrat and former slaveholder from Tennessee. Established new, all-white, governments. The new governments looked like the old confederate governments they had replaced.
