The Bargain of 1877 (The Compromise of 1877) was when there was a tie in the presidential election. Because of this, congress had to vote but the states made a deal where democrats had to support the republican candidate and the southern states would not have to follow the 14th and 15th amendments.

This was a huge set back in reconstruction because the southern states (democrats) no longer needed to follow the 14 and 15th amendments which therefore allowed people to deny citizenship to black people and deny them the right to vote.
