17 Okt 1969 Jahr - White athletic director George Spaulding brought a gun to James Blair High School. He removed the gun during a period of “some tension” between mostly individuals who were not students.

After football games, Spaulding claimed he feared for his safety; however, he never reached out to the principal or police for escorts. Other teachers were aware that he brought in, and he claimed that he did not bring it during the regular school day. Spaulding admitted that he exercised poor judgement in bringing the gun to school. He was not fired, but was removed as athletic director and was put on probation. The event spurred a review of the school policies surrounding school policies.
