As the colonies of New England were strict on religious requirements in settlers, some would be banished from the land. These banished dissidents developed the colonies of Connecticut and Rhode Island a little south from their original settlement. One of these dissidents was Anne Hutchinson, who had questioned the authority of the Puritan doctrines, founded the colony of Portsmouth alongside Roger Williams, another dissident of the Bay colony. Hutchinson supported the idea of antinomianism, or that only faith is needed to reach salvation. Hutchinson’s and Williams’ motives for migration and establishment of new colonies helped serve the idea of what the Americas provided for unwanted and persecuted people. They served as a model for the people in England to travel to the colonies to find a new haven.
