The Wilmot proviso it was a provision that was proposed by David Wilmot In order to perhaps solve the conflict that would soon arise between the north and the south. It’s stated that slavery would be banned in all the new territories from the Mexican American war. Every single time it was attempted to be ratified it would say 50-50 divide on the bill in the House of Representatives and the Senate. The passing of this bill would put the south in great distress as it would cause an increase in northern power. This caused the south to begin talks of possible secession from the union, the beginning of sentiments which would expand into something much bigger, the split into the union and the confederacy.
