At the time since there were a lot of poor people in America, many well educated middle-class men and women decided to settle into these immigrant neighborhoods and try to help the problems of these immigrant families. They would live and work in places called settlement houses. Their hopes were to relieve the effects of poverty by providing various services for the people in this area. one of the most well known of the bunch was the Hull House in Chicago. This was started by Jane Addams in 1889. The settlement houses would teach English to immigrants as well as teaching childhood education, theater, and music. These settlement workers laid the foundations of a later creative job called social workers. they were also activist who fought for child labor laws, housing reform, as well as women's rights
