Buchanans first challenge as a president was to side or not side with pro slavery state constitutin for Kansas. He admitted Kansas as a slave state and asked congress to accept the document. Congress did not do this since many democrats joined the republicans while rejecting the lecompton constitution. The settlers in Kansas then rejected the pro slavery constitution since most of them were against slavery.
