Beschreibung:

There was growing tension between the native-born protestants and Germans immigrants and Irish Catholics. The natives were hostile to the immigrants and made the Know Nothing Party. This drew the support away from the Whigs when the party was defeated in the 1852 election. The issue was their opposition to Catholics and immigrants that went to the northern cities in big groups. They quickly lost influence.
