Impressment refers to the practice of capturing and pressuring men into naval service. Throughout the 17th and early 19th centuries, the Royal Navy introduced an effective impression strategy. Although several nations have employed an impression strategy at different points in history, the term is generally used in reference to the Royal Navy of Great Britain. All British subjects, with a few minor exceptions, may be conscripted into the service of the Royal Navy under British law. The Royal Navy had trouble filling its ranks in the 1700s because desertion was usual, leading life in the navy to be harsh. The Navy had to resort to impressions to guarantee that they had
enough men. Usually, the Impress Service will travel coastal regions looking for young men to impress in service between 18 and 45 years of age. Impressment was one of the key causes of the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain, but ended in Great Britain in 1814.
