Their movement started wit violent clashes after a police raid on the Stonewall Tavern in New York City. This was a one of a series of raids on bars that were frequented by the gay community, and gay people regarded this is harassment. As a result, the raid on the Stonewall Tavern resulted in clashes that lasted for days and ultimately started the gay rights movement.
