Even though the USSR already had influence in Afghanistan, Brezhnev still wanted even more control and to create a puppet government there. This brought an extreme response from the US, with the refusal of a second SALT, trade embargoes, boycotting the Moscow Olympics, and the US sending aid to help Afghan rebels. In the end, the Soviets could not take Afghanistan, being defeated by their guerrilla warfare use. This brought down the moral of the Soviet military, and tainted the Soviet image for years.
