Street skateboarding has remained a popular activity since its development in the 1980s, and many public artworks have sustained damage from use by skateboarders. This paper looks at typical damage to outdoor public art caused by skateboarding and prevention through design, landscaping and modification. Trained conservators are accustomed to seeing the preservation of the physical substance of art as a priority and may find it difficult to reconcile any use that leads to damage. This paper attempts to explore the issues surrounding public art and skateboarding in an objective way. It examines the purpose, ownership and use of public art. It also seeks to understand how skateboarders interpret and interact with public art. The authors argue that skateboarding can have positive benefits, and, in some cases, it is appropriate to accept this use of the artwork. Suggestions are made on how to approach the conservation of public art subjected to damage as a result of skateboarding activity.
