1 Jan 1866 Jahr - Reconstruction Treaties of 1866
Beschreibung:
The Reconstruction Treaties of 1866 were treaties signed by the five civilized tribes and the U.S. government after the end of the Civil War. Under the terms of these treaties the five tribes were to abolish slavery and grant former slaves property. The tribes also had to give up their land in the western half of Oklahoma to make room for the Plains Indians. Originally, The U.S. gave the tribes much harsher conditions since the “tribespeople made unprovoked war on the United States.” The conditions were changed due to Indian delegates arguing that “many tribespeoples fought for the Union and were abandoned by the U.S. army.” They also pointed out the fact that they were independent states which gave them the right to negotiate with the Confederacy.
