The Vilna Gaon was the leader of the Mitnagdim (“the opponents”) who were against Hasidism. He felt that you should always study no matter what. That was most important to him. The Vilna Gaon also thought that Hasidism should have been abolished. He didn’t think that Hasidic faith followed the laws and commandments of the Talmud and Shulhan Arukh.
