Lily's mother starts preparing for her daughter's foot binding. The diviner and Madame Wang visit Lily's family to inform them of Lily's "special circumstances". Lily would start her foot binding a year later than traditions dictate, at the age of 7 because the arch of her feet was exceptionally high and it wasn't fully developed, giving hope that it could become very small.
