To determine whether skateboarding was an alternative sport interviews were conducted with 41 boarders aged 10-25 years. The research documented the norms and values of the boarders and compared them with the prevalent norms and values of mainstream sports. Three themes emerged which demonstrate the difference between traditional sport and skateboarding: the participants control of skateboarding; the participants' desire to individualize skateboarding and emphasize self-definition; and the devaluing of competition by participants. These characteristics enabled them to define their sport along their own terms and develop their own goals and styles.
