The document included, “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness” to be “unalienable” rights, and that when a government denies their unalienable rights, the people have the right to “alter or abolish” that government. Jefferson provided a long list of violations committed by the king and Parliament against the colonists’ unalienable rights.
