The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson. The Declaration states the reasons why the colonies of North America were seeking independence from Britan. It also states that all men are created equal and are entitled to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Independence was formally declared on July 2, 1776, however, Congress didn't approve the Declaration until July 4, 1776.
