Beschreibung:
October 1937: Ida Mae and her husband decided to leave town without a trace in sight. They want to leave town and not be suspected because they knew there was consequences that follow. They knew that they did need to pay the debt in order to leave Mr. Edd. In the novel "The Warmth of Other Suns" Wilkerson states," They would give Mr. Edd no cause to suspect their intentions or to with-hold their pay. They needed whatever was due at the settlement to get out of Mississippi. They could not risk telling anyone but, Saint and Miss Theenie and other relatives to help them leave. They still continued to pick cotton. . ."(Wilkerson page 66) Wilkerson explains that even though Ida and her husband are not his property, he still owns them in a way. He knows that they still depend on him, even if they want to leave and continue on in the North. So Ida and her husband need to pay this debt so that they can leave.
