Isaac Newton publishes Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, in which he described the three laws of motion and the law of universal gravitation. This invention of the law of universal gravitation helped astronomers to predict the motions of planets, but it gave them a problem in calculating the precise orbit of the planet Mercury.
