Addax Petroleum Corp., a Calgary-based oil company focused on West Africa, said a contractor died and two others were injured following an armed raid on one of its vessels off the coast of Nigeria.

Gunmen attacked a vessel servicing the deepwater oil field known as OML 123, the company, which trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange, said in a statement.

It was the second attack against the company in as many days in Nigeria.

On Monday Addax said unidentified gunmen in two speedboats killed a navy escort and injured four others in a separate attack in Nigeria that was repelled by eight navy escorts on board. That incident occurred about 40 kilometres offshore in the OML 126 deepwater oil field.

The company called timing of the attacks coincidental.

Local and federal government agencies have initiated investigations into both incidents.
