This case began when Norman McCorvey discovered she was pregnant with her third child. She lived in Texas, where abortion was legal, but attempting to gain an abortion by claiming she was raped and by illegal clinics. She failed to gain abortion, and filed suit on the state of Dallas. The Supreme Court ruled that the right to privacy, listed under the Due Process Clause of the 14th amendment, extends to the decision by a woman to have an abortion. Mother seeking abortions gained much more control, states still had a large hand in when the abortion would be allowed and how. Norma McCorvey gave birth to the child before the trial was over.
