Skateboarding, by association, comes with a freeing sense of rebellion. Every street becomes a limitless playground for skaters who spend day and night gliding across pavement with nothing but their own boards beneath their feet. Whether it’s nailing the perfect death-defying mid-air stunts or wearing the inevitable battle scars that come in between, skaters have a taste for risk that those of us on the ground simply don’t.
For nearly 10 years, Jonathan Mehring photographed skateboarders from all over the world, including a group of Native American teens at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and Vietnamese children with homemade wooden skateboards in the countryside. Beyond these impressive landscapes and hair-raising tricks, Mehring documents the spirit of skateboarding culture found in unassuming small cities and towns: quiet moments where people find community and solace in a pastime that can be a distraction from hardship, and the skateboard a badge of camaraderie.
