15 Jun 2017 Jahr - The Myth of the Cool Dad: How Skateboarding with My Son Changed My Understanding of Fatherhood

At 21, I became a dad, and figured I knew how fathers were supposed to act. Then my son found my old skateboard—and flipped my ideas of parenting upside down.
I never wanted to be a “cool dad.” My sense would be that fatherhood would somehow transform me into an ideal, dependably boring dad: relatively carefree, tolerant about most things, but not desperate to indulge my kids’ every whim. Besides my own dad, my pop culture platonic ideals of the perfect dad included Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, David Beckham, and Uncle Phil.
The thing is, I’m a young dad. My son is 10, I’m 31. The 21 years that separate us, in the grand scheme of things, don't represent a great chasm. I was barely an adult when he came into my life, and in some ways we grew up in tandem. Inevitably our interests were going to overlap—but which ones?
