1 Jan 843 Jahr - Treaty of Verdun
Beschreibung:
The dividing of the Frankish empire built by Charlemagne that he had left for his only surviving son, Louis Pious. Louis tried to keep the empire intact, but this proved to be impossible. The nobility would engage in war with its emperor, often allying themselves with one of Louis's sons. Shortly after Louis's death, his three sons agreed to the Treaty of Verdun, dividing the empire between the three sons, who then proceeded to fight each other again. Here the Frankish empire would come to an end and would not last. This would eventually lead to a decentralization of power at the local level. All three kingdoms controlled by the three sons of Louis the Pious were torn by domestic dissension and disorder.
Civil wars would weaken the power and prestige of kings even further, who could do little about this domestic violence. Moreover,
the coastal defenses put up by Charlemagne and maintained by Louis were neglected and deteriorated, which would leave the kingdoms vulnerable to external attacks. The Frankish king would prove to be unable to halt the great invasions, especially those of the Vikings, this would weaken the royal authority as well. Now the local aristocracy had to take responsibility to defend its lands.
