6 Aug 1965 Jahr - The Voting Rights Act of 1965

Beschreibung:

What is it? The purpose of the The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is to create legislation to overcome some of the legal barriers that prevented African Americans from voting. These were generally at the state and local levels. For example, literacy tests were given in some areas which were difficult because they lacked the resources to learn so a lot were illiterate. The Act basically just made these sort of voter requirements illegal so that all African Americans can exercise their right to vote.
Who was involved? Although it was officially passed by Lyndon B. Johnson, again, it was the work of many of the movement leaders and large scale protests which led to this.
Where did it Happen? White House and Capitol
Major Cause: Work of many movement leaders using tactics of nonviolent direct action protests which led up to this change, also the fact that African Americans still had to go through some legal barriers to vote even after the Civil Rights Act was disappointing and had to be changed.
Major Effect: Now, there can not be any legal barriers for example, literacy tests, which basically prevents African Americans from exercising their right to vote.
