Many Chinese citizens felt that the government was too authoritarian, and that the leaders of the CCP were too repressive. It is estimated that about a million students gathered in the square to show their dissatisfaction with their limited rights. After several week of peaceful protests, the CCP sent in troops who killed about 300 people and arrested about 10,000 more.
